As the age of conspicuous consumption stares back at us like Dorian Gray’s passport photo, many of us are looking for a more meaningful holiday experience than grabbing gratuitous me-time beside yet another tropical pool. The National Trust reports record bookings for its 2009 working holidays, and voluntourism outfits, such as the TUI-owned i-to-i, say interest is higher than ever in their overseas programmes.
